Mahindra has launched its SsangYong Rexton premium SUV at a competitive price tag of Rs 17.67 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). Assembled at Mahindra’s Chakan plant, the company’s first SUV from the SsangYong stable will compete with the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Hyundai Santa Fe and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.The new Rexton is powered by a five-cylinder DOHC 2.7-litre turbo-diesel motor, sourced from Mercedes and will be offered with 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic variants. The engine has been tuned differently for the two gearboxes so the manual version will have a power and torque rating of 162bhp and 34.7kgm while the automatic version will produce a far more substantial 184bhp and 41kgm.
The Rexton comes in two variants, Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton RX5 and Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton RX7.
The Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton RX5 comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox. It gets Premium fabric upholstery, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, and 8-way manually adjustable driver seat.
The Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton RX7 comes with a 5-speed automatic gearbox. It gets premium leather upholstery, leather wrapped steering wheel with additional metal grain accents, gear knob with chrome and 8-way electrically adjustable driver seat.In terms of styling, the new Rexton comes with a refreshed front fascia, new projector headlamps with LED-surrounds and LED fog lamps, all-new front bumper, new wheel-arches and LED turn-indicators on the wing mirrors. The Rexton’s trademark Z-shaped C-pillar remains and rear styling gets minor sheet metal changes. The rear bumper-line now flows well with the lip of the boot-lid and the SUV also gets a mildly re-shaped tail-lamps. On the inside, the SUV has received minor upgrades -- lighter shades and improved plastics. Like the XUV 500, the Rexton too comes loaded with features including a sunroof, climate control, rear parking sensors, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control and steering-mounted audio controls.According to Mahindra, the Rexton delivers an ARAI-claimed fuel-efficiency figure 12.4kpl for Manual transmission equipped Rexton and 11.18kpl for the automatic version.The new Rexton will be sold through Mahindra’s existing dealer network and the carmaker now hopes to further expand its presence in the high-end SUV segment.

Mahindra-SsangYong Rexton Preview
Mahindra & Mahindra has announced to launch its first model under Korean subsidiary brand, the all-new Ssangyong Rexton 2013 SUV in Indian market on 17th October. The launch is planned in Mumbai, which is followed by launch in Bangalore and New Delhi.The Rexton will be the flagship vehicle in passenger car segment from Mahindra, which will compete with premium SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Chevrolet Captiva, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and others on price.Rexton gets a new nose that includes new projector headlamps with LED-surrounds and LED fog lamps. The redesigned chrome-lined grille is wider, looks much smarter and houses a large SsangYong logo in the centre. The front bumper is also all-new, lending the upgraded vehicle a more aggressive edge than the current model. The new wheel-arches blend well with the overall design, as opposed to the bulbous ones on the current car. It also gets integrated LED turn-indicators on the wing mirrors.

Are not available yet, it is said it will be powered by a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder common-rail diesel engine developing 152bhp and 367Nm of torque. It is also touted to be 20 per cent more efficient than the current engine at 13.7kmpl with the 2WD and five-speed automatic transmission.Mahindra-SsangYong Rexton will be manufactured at Mahindra’s Chakan facility near Pune under Ssangyong badge for the Indian market, the company said. It is the first product from Ssangyong’s portfolio to be launched in the country since Mahindra acquired the Korean company in March 2011.Pawan Goenka, President, Automotive and Farm Equipment Sectors, M&M & Chairman, SsangYong Motor said, “The launch of the XUV500 last year helped Mahindra stamp its presence on the segment of premium SUVs. With the launch of the SsangYong Rexton, we hope to further expand the Mahindra presence in the high-end SUV segment”.
It is expected that Mahindra will price the Rexton at around Rs 18.5 lakh.
